tips for spectacular photos

Q: I really want to look my best on the day of my event; are there any particular hairstyles that are better/worse than others when photographed?

A: There really is no "general rule" when it comes to hairstyles. However, there are a few pointers you should be aware of.

First, an often overlooked reality that involves your choice of hairstyle is in regards to the weather as well as the time of day for your ceremony. Specifically, if you happened to schedule your ceremony in the mid to late afternoon near the beach or on a hilltop overlooking the ocean, just realize that it is virtually guaranteed that the wind will blow with some gusto. Accordingly, to mitigate the chance of you looking like a Category 5 hurricane survivor, it is in your best interest to not have too much loose hair. Don't forget about your veil either...make sure it has a solid clip (I've had veils blow off brides during the ceremony on countless occasions).

The second tip actually is somewhat related to my first comment regarding having too much loose hair during an outdoor breezy ceremony. That is, please don't misunderstand me and pin your hair back/up really tight with thus a few curly tendrils on the sides of your face. Again, although such a style might look spectacular in the salon or during a short period of time, you must realize that your event will last a good period of time and, if history is a good indicator, tendrils will get in your eyes and you'll end up brushing them aside quite frequently. Obviously, taking pictures of a person who is constantly batting their hair out of their eyes is, well, let's just use the word "challenging." To generalize the two tips above, I'd recommend you not let your hair all the way down and free-flowing during an outdoor wedding; but conversely, don't get too extreme and pin it up so that you have tendrils that will inevitably but and annoy you.

The final tip regarding your hair could probably fall under my FAQ Question about makeup, but I suppose I'll throw it in here. If you plan to use special hair treatments or products (especially glitter containing hair sprays), just realize that when your hair or face brushes against the groom, well, his black suit/tux starts getting more and more glittery as the day goes on.  Before you know it, and depending of course on the product, photos of the groom start looking a lot like he has a major dandruff problem (especially later in the evening when we may use the flash). A very easy way to prevent this is to simply test the product before hand to see how much transfers to dark clothing (don't just assume that a high-end brand that is costly is necessarily the best in this regard...trial and error is the best bet to find the answer).
